Liu Shenggang

Liu Shenggang (1933- ) is a native of Feidong, Anhui Province. He is an electronic physicist. He graduated from Electrical Engineering Department, Nanjing Institute of Technology (former name of Southeast University) in 1955. He received his assistant doctorate degree dissertation from Chengdu Telecommunication Engineering Institute in 1958. Liu was elected as an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in1980.From the mid-1980s until his retirement in 2001, Liu was professor and President of Electronic Science and Technology University. In 2008, he set up Tera-hertz Research Institute in Southeast University and served as head of this Institute.

Liu made a series of significant and outstanding achievements in electronic cyclotron maser, free electronic lasers, special quasi-optical resonance and its application, microwave electronics and microwave plasma electronics, and so on. He initiated a new complex static and powerful current electronic optical system and carried out strict theoretical analysis. Liu also established a broad-sense powerful current electronic contrail equation, and established a dynamics theory system of electronic cyclotron maser based on electronic cyclotron center coordinate systems, which won State Natural Sciences Award, Third Class and State Technological Invention Award, Third Class. He initiated and developed the concept of static electronic cyclotron maser and linear and nonlinear theory, based on which he put forward new concepts of static free electronic lasers and theory. He also introduced a special quasi-optical resonance system, and conducted theoretical analysis and experimental validation. Professor Liu developed space charge wave theory of the principle of relativity and space charge wave theory of the free electronic laser. In recent years, he has put forward mutual action theory of electron beam -wave-plasm. One of his monographs On Relativistic Electronics, the one and only book in this field in China and the most complete and systematic internationally, was widely adopted in western countries and won National Excellent Book Award, First Class in 1990. He has also introduced ion channel mixed instability theory and free electronic laser of ion channel electromagnetic wave pump and its theory. Professor Liu is also responsible for the theory where microwave plasm excites quasi-molecular lasers, which laid a strong theoretical foundation for the development of plasm microwave electronics. In 2003, Liu was conferred Kenneth. J. Button Prize, which is the highest prize in infrared and millimeter waves and terahertz electronics, in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Science of the Electromagnetic Spectrum. He was the first scientist to receive this prize in China Mainland.
